Politics: GOP Debate

I don't generally do this.  Even though I minored in political science, I don't always feel qualified to voice my political opinions; and I don't like conflict and a lot of times political opinions lead to conflict.  However, I have been getting really opinionated on the Republican candidates for this upcoming election and I figured, this is my blog, I'm going to share.

Now...I haven't deeply researched any of the candidates.  I'm just basing my opinions off of the debates.  But I feel like these debates really speak loudly for each candidate.  I am baffled by some of the reviews on them though, so that's why I want to do my own review. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from M.E.

The Good: Yep.  I'm gonna say it: Mitt Romney.  No...not just because I'm a Mormon. Mainly because the man knows his stuff.  He is a great speaker.  Very composed.  Very informative, and he has a PLAN! A couple of the candidates (OK...really just  one) doesn't give any specifics.  But Mitt is in the know! Now...I don't know all the specifics about his health plan in Massachusetts.  But I do know that he has never evaded a question and he has clarified his actions and stances very well.  I think he has done great so far.  I generally don't like drama or taking another person down, and I realize that Mitt has done that, however, the information he relays about his opponents is important to know.  And if he hadn't put it out there, I wouldn't have known that information.  After reading a couple of fact checking articles all of his answers have been legit.  He knows his stuff and has been around the political and business/private sector atmosphere. So...so far, he is a top runner for me.

Newt Gingrich.  Another good one.  Seriously...I wish they would give every question to Newt.  I love everything he says.  Not only are they super funny most of the time, but spot on correct.  I know that all of these candidates are "qualified" but him being a really good Speaker of the House is big to me.  It means he was able to get a lot of policy done, knows how the system works, and just knows all about politics and Washington.  And...he knows the ultimate goal; just getting Obama out of office.  He doesn't play games, he says it like it is. When people try and catch him in something I love how he just says the facts.  He doesn't pander at all.

Ok...so really, those are my two favorites right now.

The Bad. There's really only one big bad guy for me.  Rick Perry. I can't believe he is a front runner.  I feel like the only things he has going for him is that 1. he's attractive for an older man 2. he has an ok voice and 3. he's from Texas.  Other than that I don't think he's appealing at all. In fact, I think he's kind of shady.  For the most part, I think all of the candidates are very genuine...at least to the point that politicians can be.  They genuinely believe in what they're fighting for/really want to be elected to help make our country better. I don't trust Perry.  1.  He never says anything specific, I feel like he really doesn't have a plan about anything.

2. The man can't speak! Oh my goodness it's like listening to a 5th grader give their first speech in school.  "Social Security...........(pause)........ponsy scheme..............(pause)..........Economy............(pause)............bad.........".  He doesn't even use proper grammar when he's talking.  Now...I know I'm not one to judge, since I know my grammar isn't what it used to be when I was in school.  But a presidential candidate has got to get the little things right...or how else is he going to pay attention enough to make foreign address speeches.  He'd obviously need to hire better speech writers than he has now because I don't feel like he's making the cut.  AND yet...all the polls and critics are showing him on top.

The Ugly.  Ok this isn't ugly physically...really a continuation/really ugly/unsettling thing about Rick Perry 3.  He evades his questions and changes his opinion on things.  Just between the last two debates he has revoiced/CHANGED his opinion (because really...stance is a word better used on people taking things seriously) on Social Security (from doing away with it to modifying it).  Not to mention the whole HPV vaccine fiasco in Texas! When I heard about that I was really angry.  I couldn't believe that someone would make an executive order to force 12 year old girls to take vaccine for an STD.  I know the world is getting worse and worse, but I really hope that not all 12 year old girls are sexually active.  I would be irate as a parent, especially since giving this vaccine then makes these girls think 1. are they in danger of this STD right now 2. should they be sexually active? 3. there is always a risk with any vaccine (especially a fairly recent one as this) of the vaccine actually giving the person that virus...now I know this is a small percentage...but Texas is a big place...some poor 12 year old girl may have gotten HPV because of this.   UG!...I know he was saying he was trying to help prevent cancer...but that doesn't have an ounce of common sense attached to it.

As you can tell...I'm kind of riled up about this situation.  Another reason why I decided to post about it.  In general, I think that all the other candidates (Perry excluded) have their hearts in the right places.  I think they all make really good points here and there and I think some of them are very genuine; it's no wonder they're in high positions of power.  However, and I hate saying his name over and over because it bad publicity can be good publicity, but I just think Perry seems shady.  He does have some pizaz...but we really don't need a showy president! It doesn't matter what he looks like! We need someone who is smart and who will get things done the right way.  I think I could go on and on but this is already a novel, so there is my stance on the Republican candidates so far.
GO ROMENY!!!!

GO Gingrich!!!

They're the only two that I would feel comfortable with being in the White House.

  1. Please take Newt Gringrich off your good list. He is an adulterer who cheated on his last wife wife with the woman he is now marred to. He is not a family values man. I wish he would just drop out of the race.

  2. Oh. Well see. There you go. I had no idea. I know nothing about these people's personal lives. I've just been judging based on the debates. But cheating...definitely not good.

  3. Yeah, they can be deceiving. He is a career politician (which is why he says he cheated on his second wife!) He gets so little news coverage though I often forget that he is running.
    Go Mitt!
